Dija, seen here with her trainer Julie Noyes, is a FEMA certified scent dog. Smell is a dog's primary sense and is said to be a thousand times more sensitive than that of humans. Canines are able to locate everything from forensic materials to disaster survivors because they have more than 220 million olfactory receptors compared to only 5 million in humans.
